If you looked at your CV, would you hire yourself? That was the question City CV’s CEO, Victoria McLean, asked the audience at the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Institute annual conference in London. Remember, recruiters and hiring managers spend just six seconds on average looking at each CV. If yours doesn’t stand out for all the right reasons, you can forget about being invited to an interview.

The CFA Institute’s editor, Paul McCaffrey, has summarised the CV marketing tips and insights Victoria shared in her presentation. If you want to find out about beating the bots and perfecting your pitch, you can read the article here.

A perfect CV takes time. But, it’s worth it. While 80% of job seekers think their CV sells them well, hiring managers think more than 80% of CVs are not fit for purpose.

What’s more, re-writing your CV is really empowering. “It gives you clarity and focus,” says Victoria. “That not only helps you land your next job, but also gives you insights into your long-term goals and career direction.”

Of course, marketing yourself isn’t always easy. Many of us are better at focusing on what we can’t do rather than what we can. That’s where a professional CV consultation can really add value.
